Bio

Claudia SchurmannI am a statistical geneticist with a translational research focus aiming to understand the underlying genetic architecture of complex metabolic and cardiovascular disorders. I have more than six years of post-Ph.D. experience including three years of industry experience in drug target discovery and validation using large-scale genomic and electronic health record (EHR) data. I enjoy problem solving and tackling hard questions relevant to human health. In my current role, I leverage digital data, including EHR data, outputs from sensors and wearables as well as features extracted using machine learning methods, and apply insights from genomics to support disease and risk prediction to personalize and improve health and disease management. During my Ph.D. studies, I analyzed large-scale complex genomic and transcriptomic data. A primary focus was the development and establishment of an automated workflow for the analysis and integration of complex Omics data. As Postdoctoral Research Fellow I utilized EHR data to advance medicine. I developed novel algorithms to extract distinct phenotypes from EHR data. Furthermore, I led and co-led several large-scale genome-wide association studies to identify specific genetic phenotypes associated with complex metabolic diseases and traits such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, or body fat percentage as part of large international collaborations like the Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) consortium, The Genetic Investigation of Anthropometric Traits (GIANT) consortium, The Population Architecture using Genetic Epidemiology (PAGE), and the Accelerating Medicines Partnership - Type 2 Diabetes (AMP-T2D) consortium.
